Because of the high-tension springs, working with garage doors can be very dangerous. STEELBUILDING.COM has no way to judge whether customers have the necessary skill or experience and therefore cannot recommend they install doors themselves. STEELBUILDING.COM explicitly advises against customers installing standard torsion springs. See the section on installation for important additional information.

The humble garage door is playing an increasingly important role in the lives of many homeowners. An attractive, properly-functioning door enhances the value of the house, protects the garage and the property stored inside, and provides a secure and convenient entrance into the home. To convey these benefits, garage doors must be properly installed and operated. Until recently, it was best to leave the installation of your door to a professional. Clopay proudly boasts that its patented EZ-Set™ spring system has changed that. According to the manufacturer, Clopay's steel doors can usually be safely installed by anyone who is moderately handy and willing to follow the simple instructions.

Note: Clopay wooden doors use standard torsion spring systems, which should only be installed by a door professional.

Safety Features
Clopay's commitment to safety is second to none. Clopay garage doors include a patented Safe-T-Bracket (not available on wooden doors), which works to prevent users from disconnecting or adjusting the bracket holding the lifting cables while a door is under spring tension, one of the most common causes of door-related accidents.

The most difficult and potentially dangerous part of installing a door is setting spring tension, but Clopay developed its special spring systems to allow do-it-yourselfers to install their own doors safely and easily. Clopay offers user-friendly EZ-Set™ versions of the two most common spring types. The EZ-Set systems are cost-added options for most steel door models. They are not available for wood doors.

Clopay's EZ-Set Extension Spring System™ (installed on either side of the tracks of lighter doors) frees users from having to manually lift the dead weight of an un-sprung door, and the EZ-Set Torsion Spring System™ (installed above the door opening for heavier, wider doors) makes it unnecessary for users to locate and prepare the center mounting pad or manually wind the spring. Clopay designed both systems so that consumers could install them using simple tools while working from the ground (a ladder may be necessary for larger doors).

STEELBUILDING.COM does not provide installation for our products. STEELBUILDING.COM has no way to judge whether a customer has the skill or experience to safely install an overhead door, so we recommend using a professional installer.
